Just a comment about DSLRs being simpler to use.  I have a Canon T1i that I use ocassionally.  Maybe it is something in my setup that I haven't discovered yet but I have found that after a period of inactivity it tends to disconnect from the computer. I have USB power saving turned off and the camera settings have been changed to not sleep but it still happens anyway.  I have to power cycle it to re-establish the connection.  As long as it doesn't sit for a while with no activity it is fine.  Also, whenever it powers up I have to tell Windows to not use the Canon software.  Don't have these kind of issues with my CCD camera.  I just start it, set the temperature, and go.
